Visit the Taj Mahal
Season 1, Episode 8, Route Marker
At the world-famous Taj Mahal, teams had to search the expansive grounds for their next clue, which instructed them to travel to Jaipurâs Hawa Mahal.
The Taj Mahal, the most recognized structure in India, was erected in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to house the remains of his deceased wife. The large mausoleum was built over the span of twenty years, and is a true vision of Mughal architecture, which combines Indian, Persian, and Islamic influences.1 The Taj Mahal took more than twenty thousand workers and one thousand elephants to build, and is a representation of Indiaâs rich culture and extensive history. Itâs central dome reaches an astounding 240 feet high with smaller domes surrounding, and the white marble appears to change color in the daylight.2 To avoid large crowds make sure to arrive at the Taj Mahal when the gates open. If you happen to arrive in India during a full moon, the Taj Mahal is open for night tours (be sure to book ahead as there are limited spots available!).
Behind-the-Scenes Snapshot: This was the first place Bertram and I scouted for season 1 of The Amazing Race. When we first set out to create the route, we liked the idea of including locations that were considered wonders of the world. The Taj Mahal is on the list of new wonders of the world, and this iconic location set the tone for our first season.
Address: Dharmapuri, Forest Colony, Tajganj, Agra, Uttar Pradesh 282001, India
How to get there: Fly into Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and take a train to Agra. There are over one hundred trains weekly and the journey takes three to four hours. From the train station take a taxi to the Taj Mahal.
